Sigiriya, the spectacular ‘Lion rock’ fortress, stands majestically overlooking the luscious green jungle surroundings, and is one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions. Sigiriya is both a palace and a fortress of stunning splendor, and is a tribute to its ingenious builders. The rock fortress was built by King Kasyapa way back in 473 AD to ward off invasions by his enemies. Sigiriya has also been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is unofficially considered to be the Eighth World Wonder. The technology and advanced irrigation systems of this fortress have bewildered modern engineers as it is way ahead of its time. The fortress is further enhanced by the remarkable lion paws carved into the entrance, beautiful water gardens, Sigiriya frescoes and the graffiti mirror wall.
